Our Motherland

Below are three locations in Germany that played a role in our Leuck heritage.  Borg and Eft-Hellendorg are both villages where our ancestors lived.  Saarland is the state in Germany where both of these villages are located.  Click on the photo in each section to view additional photos of the area that I took while conducting my research.

Borg (Village)

Peter and Katarina Leuck emigrated from Borg, Germany on August 2nd, 1882. Borg is located in the Southwestern corner of Germany in the state of Saarland, approximately 10 kilometers from the French border.

At the time of my visit, Borg had a population of approximately 370 people.

Saarland (State)

Saarland is a German state located in southwestern Germany bordering France and Luxembourg. The capital of Saarland is Saarbrücken, where the Stadtbibliotek (family history library) is located.  Saarland is also home to the Saar River and it's famed Saar bend (photo below) and the Leuk Waterfall.  Borg and Eft-Hellendorf are both located in the state of Saarland.

Eft-Hellendorf (Village)

Eft-Hellendorf is actually comprised of 2 villages, Eft and Hellendorf, once separate but now considered combined.  Both villages are located approximately 1 km from the French border.  Eft is where the Leuk well was discovered by the Celtics in 200 AD. The well was named Leuk, which is Celtic for "bright light".  This well is where our first known ancestors took the family name. It is also the origin point of the Leuk River which flows North 15 kilometers to Saarburg and spills over the Leuk Waterfall and finally into the Saar River.
